A New Name for High Fructose Corn Syrup

We’ve mentioned a few times in class high fructose corn syrup an article in The New York Times caught my attention: “A New Name for High-Fructose Corn Syrup” The Corn Refiners Association is trying to improve the image of the sweetener with ad campaigns promoting it as a natural ingredient made from corn. The group has petitioned the U.S. FDA to start calling the ingredient “corn sugar”, to “clear up confusion about the product”. Another words I see it as making it sound better so we will consume it. There has been some speculation that high-fructose corn syrup can contribute to obesity by disrupting normal metabolic function, however most scientists and nutrition experts agree that in terms of health, the effect of high-fructose corn syrup is the same as regular sugar, too much of either ingredient is bad for your health. So does changing the name make us Americans more likely to consume it??..Not me.
